GPS Tracking and Recent Solar Flares: The Potential Effects of Space Weather

Pinterest

Both NASA and Japanese scientists warn that recent solar flares could potentially disrupt GPS tracking, as well as other applications that rely on the GPS constellation.

Recent solar flares could potentially harm GPS, satellites, power lines, and more.

Just to be clear, solar flares have the potential
to affect much more than merely GPS tracking, but also every other technology that relies on the GPS system, and then some. However, this IS predominantly a GPS tracking blog, so we
felt it our duty to pay homage ;) .

Solar flares, or sunspots, are not a trivial thing. They have the potential to significantly impact GPS tracking, as well as many other GPS-based technologies. That being said, Hollywood has done an excellent job of dramatizing things and, for lack of a better term, putting the fear of God in us. The aim of this article is to briefly shed some light on solar weather, and to help bridge the gap between the movies and reality.

We are currently in the 4th year of Sunspot Cycle 24, with many scientists predicting that the fall of 2013 is the time of the next solar maximum in the 11 year cycle. So, what does this mean to us? RUN!! Run for the hills!!

Seriously though, when we are in the midst of an active solar cycle and when solar flare activity is reaching a peak, the Earth’s magnetic field saves us from much of the worst of things that could occur, but not everything. Solar flares cause the emission of high-energy protons and electromagnetic radiation that is mostly stopped by our atmosphere. However, the ionosphere becomes disturbed which, in turn, can potentially disrupt radio communications. It is the potential of solar flares leading to geomagnetic storms that would have the most impact on GPS tracking and other satellite navigation applications.

Solar storms produce charged particles that can potentially damage high Earth-orbiting communications satellites, and users of GPS tracking devices and services would obviously be affected. GPS tracking is also a highly precise science, and its precision could be adversely affected if the worst occurs.Take comfort in the fact that, as far as we know, no one has lost their life due to solar flare tragedies. However, we could be wrong, but as far as we know. With all of the recent talk of solar flares, expect Hollywood to make a run on movies about the big, bad sun very soon.

There is, of course, much more to the science of solar flare phenomenon than this short post, but we figured this would be enough to wet your whistle. GPS tracking users beware!

GPS Tracking Meeting Resistance From Police and Fire Unions

Pinterest

GPS tracking has long been a tool used in the effective deployment of police and fire fleets, helping to enhance dispatch operations and improve response times. However, recent disciplinary proceedings and proposed legislation have fostered opposition in how GPS is monitoring first responder personnel. Let the “Big Brother” debate begin!

GPS Tracking Meeting Resistance From Police and Fire Unions

For years, GPS tracking technology was a tool only feasible for federal, and sometimes state, government agencies to take advantage of. In its infancy, before tracking devices and services had reached the mainstream public, it simply wasn’t an affordable option for anyone other than government. However, as GPS tracking has become more widely accepted and adopted, supply has risen to meet demand, and cost has been driven down to acceptable levels for private enterprise and individual consumers. With the growing adoption of GPS tracking technology comes increased familiarity with how the system works. City officials and the general public now want access to the monitoring data to serve as a system of oversight of police and fire personnel, and to facilitate disciplinary action in the event that misconduct is discovered. Obviously, these requests are being met with heated opposition from police and fire officials and unions.

Law enforcement officials are making some compelling arguments against the release of the information. Their position is that by publishing the historical GPS data, patrol routines would be made readily available for all to see, potentially putting valuable intelligence in the hands of the criminals. The police and fire unions are also throwing their hat in the ring. Grievances have been filed in the shadow of ongoing investigations of fire personnel vehicles speeding in excess of 100 mph, all recorded by the GPS tracking devices deployed throughout their fleet. Any disciplinary action has far-reaching implications. This hot-button issue is sure to continue galvanizing positions on both sides.

GPS Tracking News – The Latest Developments in GPS Tracking Technology for Sunday May 5, 2013

GPS tracking technology continues to alter the landscape of the world that we live in. It transforms location and movement data and gives real meaning to what’s happening with remote vehicles, assets, and individuals.

It never ceases to amaze that with the myriad of applications for GPS tracking technology, and its far-reaching implications, new examples of its adoption are coming to light on a daily basis. The world vehicle population is well over 1 billion units, with only a fraction of that number being actively tracked and monitored. It is inevitable that organizations and individuals will want to join the ranks of those that are realizing the benefits and the visibility that GPS tracking offers. Strategies and tactics are being overhauled and improved by those that embrace the endless array of benefits it can provide.  Here are a few recent examples of the growing proliferation of GPS tracking across the world:

School Bus Fleet Tracking

Mumbai: 1,500 school buses to get CCTVs, GPS

In Mumbai, India, the School Bus Owners Association, schools, and parents have recently ended their dispute with an agreement to tighten security measures. A compromise was met that will allow the deployment of CCTV and GPS tracking technology throughout pupil transportation fleets. This was all necessitated by a recent spate of student molestations perpetrated by the very school bus attendants charged with the well-being of the children in their care. The prevention of such grotesque and senseless acts is a perfect example of the power that tracking technology puts at the fingertips of its users.

Problems Plague California’s Flawed GPS Monitoring Program

This is a prime example of the problems that can arise if proper due diligence is not conducted when choosing a GPS tracking product or service. In applications as critically important as monitoring criminal offenders, it becomes an ethical imperative that the selected device receive a rigorous battery of testing and undergoes deployment in a pilot program to simulate real-world tracking conditions. Anything less is simply irresponsible!

There have been countless recent articles highlighting the deficiencies with monitoring offenders in California, and it seems that the majority of the problems could have been avoided by taking some simple steps before the program was initiated. From what we’ve seen and read, the crux of the issue is with offenders simply severing the device “bracelet”, without immediate SMS violation alerts being sent to the proper predetermined corrections personnel. This is a big no no as it is completely avoidable. Either the proper training on the tracking system wasn’t facilitated, or the D.O.C failed to heed the training and properly configure the system. In any event, there is plenty of blame to go around.
